Supportive Services for the Elderly provide door-to-door service to people 60 and older for medical appointments, grocery shopping and other necessities such as taxpayer responsibilities. At least three days' notice is usually required. Transportation appointments end at 3:30 p.m. daily. Countywide services runs from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 226-9212.
Seniors in Bexar and surrounding counties can also call the Texas Department of Transportation, Carolyn Goodall, Public Transportation Administrator, at 615-5924. Additional transportation information is available, some are covered by Medicare and other government programs.
Taxi or van services, although more costly than mass transit or publicly supported services for elderly and/or disabled, may sometimes be the best way to get around on short notice.
Churches and other community groups such as the American Association of Retired Persons may also provide rides in a defined area.
VIA Metropolitan Transit have half-price fares for bus riders 65 and older. Disabled seniors may qualify for VIAtrans, a door-to-door service that requires at least 24 hours' notice. Call 362-2020 for more information on all VIA services.
